Teaching Methods
Over the 8 years I've been teaching, I have built up a good reputation and some valuable teaching methods.
The first lesson, I'll review your playing style and correct any bad habits you may have picked up along the way. (Hopefully you won't have any, but you never know
)We'll then prepare a study plan for you to follow as you progress, and I'll give you some tips and advice on practicing and caring for your guitar.
We'll also explore to find out what some of your favourite songs are so we can work towards learning and playing them.
Many of my existing students, love to play songs they know and like and sometimes it's better than playing from grade books or playing songs and tunes that the guitar tutor insists you play.
I much prefer this style and method of teaching.
If you're a beginner, I'll start by showing you the basic chord shapes that are needed to play the different songs we'll cover. I'll teach you the rhythm pattern or the finger techniques used to play the songs.
We'll learn the basics of the guitar, the different string names, how to hold the guitar, how and what to practice, various left and right hand techniques, rhythm, lead playing and lots, lots more.
If you've already been playing for a while, we'll build upon your existing knowledge and again correct any bad habits you may have picked up along the way.
There's so much to learn with the guitar but you don't need to know it all in order to play along with your favourite songs and tunes. We only really need to learn a few chords and rhythm patterns and it's actually much easier than you may have thought.
Once you've got those under your belt, you'll be playing along with the record very easily and quickly.
I'll ask you a few questions to assess your knowledge of the guitar and find out which styles you're interested in learning.
We'll then learn the various techniques you'll need to play that particular style, ie scales, arpeggios, legato, speed picking, sweep picking, theory, sight reading etc and incorporate it into your practice routine.
I genuinely want every student to do his/her best and will always do my best to achieve this. My desire to help people learn doesn't always stop after the lesson has finished. If you would like any help with anything then please remember I am only a phone call away.
Sometimes buying a new guitar can be daunting especially if you've never bought one before, so I can also advise you on buying a guitar for yourself, son/daughter, partner or friend to ensure you buy the correct type and size.
